About this video

A 4-2-5 defense only has two linebackers, so every run fit has to be exact. In this session Coach Justin Conyers details what each of the eleven defenders is responsible for against the run in his high school conversion of the college 4-2-5, drawing on principles used at TCU and Virginia Tech. The organizing idea is the 'Umbrella' — the front six pushing the ball carrier outside — supported by the slide concept and by clearly defined read-side and away-side run support so the defense stays sound while it changes looks.

What you'll learn

  • Basic run responsibilities for every defender in the 4-2-5
  • How the 'Umbrella' concept works, with the front six pushing the ball carrier outside
  • The slide concept and how it complements the umbrella
  • Run fit responsibilities while playing multiple looks
  • Read-side and away-side run support, including support rules against the spread offense
  • The importance of the one-high safety look
  • How to defend the option with a nine-man box
  • How to defend the power play and the power sweep
  • The Read Drill for the Mike and Will linebackers, teaching vertical and horizontal reads on the ball carrier
  • How to defend the backside run, and why flying to the ball has to be preached every play

Who it's for

High school defensive coordinators and linebacker coaches running or installing a 4-2-5, and coaches facing option, power and spread run games who need a fit system that holds up against all three.

Frequently asked questions

What does this video teach?

Run defense in the 4-2-5 — every defender's fit, the Umbrella and slide concepts, read-side and away-side support, one-high structure, nine-man box option answers, and specific plans for power, power sweep and backside runs.

Which coaches is it written for?

High school defensive coordinators and front-seven coaches, particularly staffs that have taken a college 4-2-5 and found the install too heavy. The run fit logic also transfers to 4-3 and 4-4 teams adding a fifth defensive back.

How do I get the video?

Nothing to ship. For $19.95 it streams instantly in your AFM Videos account on any device, and your purchase gives you unlimited views with no time limit. It is also one of the titles streaming inside the $99-a-year 1-Year All Access membership.

Is there a drill for teaching the linebacker reads?

Yes. Coach Conyers walks through the Read Drill for the Mike and Will, working both vertical and horizontal reads on the ball carrier so the two inside backers trigger correctly inside the umbrella.
