About this video

David Buchanan built the triple screen into a staple of the Mason County High School offense, and in this coaching video he installs it from the ground up: why the play exists, how the back gets to the edge and how it is blocked against different fronts. Double screens are everywhere; a triple screen that can hit the left, right or middle of the defense is not. The design gives you a kickoff-return look from scrimmage, one athlete with the ball and blockers in space, and nothing before the snap tells the defense which way it is going.

What you'll learn

  • How the triple screen was developed and became a staple of the Mason County offense.
  • How the triple screen takes the strength of the opponent's defense and turns it into a weakness.
  • Positioning the back so he gets to the edge quickly.
  • Creating a kickoff-return style play so your ball carrier has blockers in space.
  • Reading the linebackers before deciding where the triple screen is thrown.
  • Blocking assignments for the triple screen against different fronts.
  • Bonus What if?: how to attack the defense when the defensive line or the linebackers sit on the screen.

Who it's for

High school and college offensive coordinators and quarterback coaches who want one screen call that threatens three directions. Coach Buchanan notes the triple screen works best when you have an inside receiver on each side of the ball.

About the coach

David Buchanan served as head coach at Mason County High School in Maysville, Kentucky, where the triple screen became an effective, regular part of the offense, including a fourth-and-10 call that went for a touchdown.

This is Part 1 of Coach Buchanan's four-part series and it includes extensive game film. Runtime: about 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What does The Triple Screen cover?

Coach Buchanan's triple screen, a screen pass that can be thrown left, right or to the middle depending on how the linebackers react. He covers the back's path to the edge, blocking assignments against different fronts and a bonus segment on attacking a defense whose line or linebackers sit on the screen.

Which coaches will get the most out of it?

High school and college offensive coaches who want a screen that attacks three directions from one look. It fits best in formations with an inside receiver on each side of the ball, which is where Coach Buchanan says the play works best.

How do I watch it?

It is a Buy Now, Watch Now streaming video: pay $19.95 and it starts streaming right away in your AFM Videos account on any device, with unlimited views. It is also part of the 1-Year All Access streaming membership ($99/year), which unlocks every video in the library.

Is this part of a series?

Yes. It is the first of four videos Coach Buchanan filmed on the Mason County offense; the others cover attacking zero coverage, the Zone Slant and the Open Punt. Each stands on its own, and this one uses extensive game film to show the triple screen against live defenses.
