About this video
Dale Weiner's Spin offense running game is where the scheme's misdirection starts. First unveiled by Catholic High School of Baton Rouge in the Louisiana state playoffs, the Spin grew out of Coach Weiner's search for a different way to run counter and sweep, and it takes its name from the quarterback pivoting on every play. This session installs the shotgun double slot set and the three base running plays that everything else in the offense is built around.
What you'll learn
- The Spin's shotgun double slot set and why the quarterback pivots on every snap
- The Spin Sweep: assignments and responsibilities for all eleven players
- The Counter Sweep and how it feeds off the same backfield mesh
- Quarterback Power as the third base run of the Spin offense
- How similar pattern meshes between the QB and three running backs hide the ball
- Meshing a spread package with option and run plays
Who it's for
High school offensive coordinators and head coaches installing the Spin or any misdirection-based running game, especially programs that want to beat more talented opponents with deception.
About the coach
Dale Weiner coached Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After introducing the Spin, his teams won 50 of their next 59 games and averaged more than 34 points per game.
Frequently asked questions
Which plays are in The Spin Offense - The Running Game?
The three base runs of the Spin: the Spin Sweep, the Counter Sweep and Quarterback Power, each with the assignments and responsibilities for every player out of the shotgun double slot set.
Do I need to run the Spin already to use this?
No. Coach Weiner explains the double slot set from the ground up, so a high school staff installing the offense for the first time can start here; coaches who run counter and sweep from other systems will see how the Spin disguises them.

What is the idea behind the Spin?
In Coach Weiner's words, it takes a spread package and finds a way to mesh it with option and run plays; because the quarterback and three backs run similar patterns on every play, the defense struggles to find the ball.
