About this video
Tommy Lewis and Jamie Lemmond of Victory Christian Academy take on the play that gives spread defenses the most trouble: the run-pass option. The RPO stretches a defense vertically and horizontally at once, and this second session of the "Simplistic Multiplicity" series shows how a multiple-look defense takes it apart, from gap responsibility up front to the 2-shell coverage that adds a box player behind it.
What you'll learn
- What the RPO is, and how its variations make the running back or quarterback a run threat with a bubble screen in reserve
- Defending the RPO from the inside out, forcing the ball carrier to the sideline with strong team pursuit
- Specific gap responsibility for every defender, and defending the right person: the player who can hurt you most
- Matching the defensive formation to down and distance, score and clock
- Using multiplicity to confuse the offensive line, including a fifth defensive lineman in the box
- Pinch and slant techniques, when an extra defender belongs at the line of scrimmage, and why staying low and square is critical
- Blitz pressures from different defenders that create confusion up front
- How base 2-shell coverage creates an extra box player, and how multiplicity affects wide receiver blocking and quarterback reads
- When to play a traditional cover 2, plus cover 3, sky and cloud coverage
Who it's for
High school defensive coordinators whose opponents lean on RPOs, and college coaches who want a simpler way to show multiple looks. The concepts work from 3-3-5, 3-5-3, 4-2-5 and 4-4 fronts.
About the coach
Tommy Lewis was head coach at Victory Christian Academy in Lakeland, Florida, and Jamie Lemmond coordinated his defense. Their program won a Florida state championship, and the two coaches teamed up on this five-part series on stopping the spread offense.
Part 2 of Coach Lewis and Coach Lemmond's five-part series on shutting down the spread offense; the session includes game footage.
Frequently asked questions
What does this session cover?
How Victory Christian Academy defends the run-pass option: identifying the RPO and its variations, playing it inside out with gap responsibility and team pursuit, adding a fifth lineman to the box, pinch and slant techniques, blitz pressure and the 2-shell coverage that creates an extra box player.
Is it only for one kind of defense?
No. The teaching is about presenting multiple fronts, movements and coverages, so a coordinator in a 3-3-5, 3-5-3, 4-2-5 or 4-4 can borrow the approach. It is aimed at high school staffs, but the RPO problem is the same at the college level.
What format is it sold in?
Buy Now, Watch Now streaming: $19.95 gets you instant playback in your AFM Videos account on any device, with no limit on views. Members of the 1-Year All Access plan ($99/year) already have it, along with the whole AFM Videos library.
Does the video show real game film?
Yes. Coach Lewis and Coach Lemmond use game footage alongside the whiteboard teaching so you can see the inside-out fits, the sideline force and the coverage looks against live RPOs.
