About this video

Foothill High School (CA) head coach Bryon Hamilton takes his Shotgun Zone Fly offense to the practice field and shows the drills he uses to teach every distinct piece of it. Each drill is demonstrated live with players, and each one is built to involve a lot of bodies and deliver a lot of teaching in a short period of practice time - the problem every high school staff is trying to solve.

What you'll learn

  • The Mesh/Sweeper Drill, which folds the whole SZF run game into one rep: sweepers reading their paths, the quarterback's role in the mesh and running backs working their timing and reads, with every skill player involved
  • The Cut Drill - simple but important - teaching players to run downhill, teaching wide receivers to make perimeter blocks and showing ball carriers how to set up and cut off a block, with real conditioning value
  • 3-on-3 Drills that simulate the inside run game, working combo blocks and point-of-attack combos for offensive linemen while ball carriers read blocks and cut
  • The QB Read Drill, built around Coach Hamilton's favorite play, the tackle pull, getting the quarterback in the habit of finding his read and tracking the block he has to follow while backs rep the mesh
  • The Pass Combo Drill, simulating the sprint out passing game and teaching the quarterback his reads and his footwork in setting up

Who it's for

For high school offensive coordinators, position coaches and head coaches running the Shotgun Zone Fly or a similar shotgun run game, especially staffs that need practice periods to teach several groups at once.
