About this video
Kevin Kelley treats the on-side kick as an offensive play rather than a desperation call, and the Pulaski Academy arsenal carries seven different ones. In this session the three-time state champion details the concept behind each kick, the responsibilities of the hitters and the gatherers, and the angles, trajectories and timing that decide whether your team comes up with the football.

About the coach
Kevin Kelley was the head coach at Pulaski Academy in Arkansas, where his unorthodox strategy produced three state titles over seven years. His approach, which includes not punting and using the on-side kick as an offensive play, was featured on HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.
One of five sessions in Coach Kelley's series on the Pulaski system. Runtime: about 61 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
How many on-side kicks are taught?
Seven. Kelley walks through the formation and strategy behind each one, the job of the hitters and the gatherers, and the angles, trajectories and timing that make a particular kick the right call.
Is the on-side kick practical for a high school team?
That is exactly the level it comes from. Kelley uses it as a called play rather than a last resort, and special teams coordinators can add one or two of his kicks without overhauling the rest of the kicking game.

What is the difference between hitters and gatherers?
They are the two jobs on Kelley's on-side kick unit: the hitters occupy and take on the front line players who would otherwise field the kick, and the gatherers are the ones assigned to come away with the football.
