About this video

Contact limits keep tightening, and tackling still has to be taught. Coach Bryan Gray and Assistant Head Coach Morris Bingham answer that with a full no-helmet tackling program — drills you can run indoors or out, in winter, spring or summer, with no equipment and no collisions. Their premise is simple: great tackling comes from fundamental repetition of hips, feet, hands and eyes, and those reps do not require a helmet. The video is organized as four progressive sections, each explained and then demonstrated on the field.

What you'll learn

  • Floor exercises for agility, change of direction and reacting to simple visual keys
  • A hip and hands explosion circuit, component by component, for building a strong individual tackler
  • The 'Putting It All Together' circuit that combines every physical movement a tackler needs
  • How the circuit develops physical and fundamental skills at the same time, safely
  • The daily Turnover Circuit, which adds take-away production to the tackling skills
  • How to fit the program into winter, spring and summer windows where contact is limited or prohibited
  • Why hips, feet, hands and eyes are the four repetition points behind every tackle

Who it's for

Coaches at every level who need a safe, year-round tackling plan — youth programs, high school defensive staffs and college position coaches alike. The progressions work whether your players are five years old or twenty-two.

About the coaches

Bryan Gray and Morris Bingham coached together at East Hall High School, where Bingham served as Gray's assistant head coach, and built this offseason tackling program around developing fundamentally sound tacklers with safety in mind.

The coaches explain and then demonstrate every drill on the field. Runtime: about 47 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a no-helmet tackling program?

It is a set of drills that build tackling fundamentals — hips, feet, hands and eyes — without helmets, pads or live collisions, so the work can be done indoors or out during offseason windows when contact is restricted.

What age group is it for?

All of them. Coaches Gray and Bingham built it to develop tacklers at any age level, from youth programs through high school and college, and the same four sections scale up or down with your players.

How do I watch it?

Buy it for $19.95 and it streams immediately from your AFM Videos account — pull it up on a phone in the weight room or cast it to a screen in the team meeting, as often as you like, with the title staying in your account. It is also covered by the $99 1-Year All Access membership.

What are the four sections?

Floor exercises for agility and visual keys, a hip and hands explosion circuit, the 'Putting It All Together' circuit that combines the full tackling movement, and a daily Turnover Circuit aimed at creating take-aways.
