About this video

Misdirection is what makes the Double Wing and I-Wing dangerous once a defense starts chasing the sweep, and Clovis East head coach Tim Murphy devotes this session to the counter game. He teaches the plays that keep a defense guessing for four quarters - the ones that turn an over-aggressive linebacker or a crashing end into an explosive gain. Every play comes with its key points, special adjustments and the blocking scheme that makes it go.

What you'll learn

  • The Counter - coaching points, adjustments and full blocking rules
  • Tackle Trap - how to influence the front and get a hat on the right defender
  • The Reverse - backfield action, timing and perimeter blocking
  • Counter variations: Counter Short, Counter Long and Counter Deep
  • Tackle Trap Influence and how it changes the defender's read
  • Reverse Log Deep and Reverse Pitch and Give
  • How the counter package ties back to the base Double Wing run game to keep defenses uncomfortable

Who it's for

Youth and high school offensive staffs running the Double Wing or I-Wing, and coordinators in any tight, misdirection-based run offense looking for counters that punish fast-flow defenses.

About the coach

Tim Murphy was head coach at Clovis East High School in California, where his Double Wing and I-Wing attack was built on ball control, timing and misdirection.

Coach Murphy walks through every play and variation, then shows press box and end zone angle cut-ups of the plays so you can see the misdirection work against live defenses.

Frequently asked questions

Which plays are covered?

The Counter, Tackle Trap and The Reverse from the Double Wing and I-Wing, each with key points, special adjustments and blocking schemes. Variations include Counter Short, Counter Long, Counter Deep, Tackle Trap Influence, Reverse Log Deep and Reverse Pitch and Give.

Is this only for Double Wing teams?

Double Wing and I-Wing staffs will plug it straight in, but the influence and trap principles behind these counters transfer to any offense that wants to make a fast-flowing defense pay.

Why does a counter package matter so much in this offense?

Coach Murphy's point is that a defense that gets comfortable stops the base run game. The counters keep linebackers and ends hesitating, and that hesitation is what turns ordinary plays into big ones.
