About this video

Steve Specht's St. Xavier Bombers use a 3-3-5 odd stack to take the zone read away, and this opening session of his defensive series builds the structure from the ground up. Coach Specht walks through base alignment, how the stack front sets against a pro set versus a spread set, and the alignment tags that let one defense look like several. From there he assigns the read scheme itself — edge players, middle stack players and the adjuster — so every defender knows who has the quarterback, who has the dive and who fits the alley.

What you'll learn

  • The base defensive alignment of the 3-3-5 and how the stack front positions against a pro set
  • Positioning of the spread front, including the Bluff tag
  • Four alignment adjustments: Falcon, Sparrow, Bluff and Ninja
  • Stack defenses with different alignment tags, plus the 30 and 'circus' fronts
  • Read-scheme responsibilities for edge players, middle stack players and the adjuster (middle safety)
  • Alley and force techniques for the perimeter players
  • The 'Hinge' technique for the safety and nub corner
  • Read scheme versus isolation, front side to back side, including both extra safeties
  • Read scheme versus stretch and toss with the same full-defense fits
  • Stack defense pressures: strong edge storm and strong 'Nasty' storm

Frequently asked questions

What does this video teach?

It is the zone-read installment of the Bomber 3-3-5 series: base and spread alignment, the Falcon, Sparrow, Bluff and Ninja adjustments, and the full read scheme against isolation and stretch/toss, with alley, force and Hinge techniques for the perimeter.

Is it only useful if I already run a 3-3-5?

Odd-stack and 3-4 stack staffs get a complete install, but any coordinator can lift the read-scheme fits, adjuster rules and alley/force teaching and apply them to a four-down front facing zone read.

How is it delivered?

There is no disc and no waiting — it is a Buy Now, Watch Now streaming video. Pay $19.95 and it plays right away in your AFM Videos account on any device, as many times as you like, for as long as you own it. It also comes with the $99-a-year 1-Year All Access membership covering the entire library.

How do the other parts of the series fit with it?

This is the first of four sessions from Coach Specht. The others cover coverages, the blitz package and defending the spread offense, so this one supplies the front and read structure the later three build pressure and coverage on top of.
