About this video

Man coverage takes away the easy completions, so Rich Hargitt answers it with stacks, bunch sets, crossers and motion out of the spread, no-huddle offense. In this part of his four-part coverage series he walks through the specific plays Nation Ford called against man, explains why each one wins its matchup, and shows how tempo keeps a man team from disguising or substituting.

What you'll learn

  • Why the spread, no-huddle offense works and how it sets the pace for an entire game
  • Simple read progressions running off one protection
  • Naming attacking plays by state so the call gets out fast with no huddle
  • The Texas Tech four verticals package against man coverage
  • The Kentucky squeeze and stack play
  • The Florida bunch play and the Kansas short motion shallow play
  • The Clemson deep cross, the Ducks X Fade and the Wyoming H Wheel
  • Attacking man coverage with motion screens
  • Making the defense play in a confined area so your athletes win in space

Who it's for

High school offensive coordinators and quarterbacks coaches who face press and man-heavy defenses, and spread coaches who need reliable answers when the safeties are not helping.

About the coach

Rich Hargitt was the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Nation Ford High School in Fort Mill, South Carolina. After the staff installed the spread, no-huddle, Nation Ford earned its first statewide top ten ranking and won the first playoff game in school history.

The philosophy of attacking man coverage is explained with actual game film. Runtime: about 47 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What is in the man coverage package?

Texas Tech four verticals, the Kentucky squeeze and stack, the Florida bunch, the Kansas short motion shallow, the Clemson deep cross, the Ducks X Fade, the Wyoming H Wheel and a set of motion screens, all designed to create rubs and confined-space matchups against man.

Is this for spread teams only?

It is taught from spread, no-huddle personnel, but the route ideas, stacks, bunch, shallow crossers, wheels and motion screens, install in any shotgun passing game and only require a single protection to get started.
