About this video

The second installment of Rich Hargitt's coverage series turns the spread, no-huddle offense loose on Cover 3. Hargitt teaches coaches to locate the soft spot in a three-deep shell first, whether that weakness sits with the defensive line, the linebackers or the secondary, then to call the concept that stresses it at a tempo the defense cannot substitute against.

What you'll learn

  • Why the spread, no-huddle offense is both efficient and effective at high school speed
  • How to find the weakness in Cover 3, up front, at linebacker or in the secondary
  • Operating at a regular or a fast tempo, and what each one buys you
  • Simple read progressions supported by four basic run plays and one protection
  • Cover 3 beaters: Texas Tech (four verticals), Florida (flood), Clemson/Wisconsin (deep cross) and Wyoming (curl/flat)
  • The Houston and Hawaii (slant/flat) quick game answers
  • Ducks 2 (quick screen), Ducks 2 Joker and the Texas Tech All Curl with its post pattern
  • How to adapt the spread, no-huddle to the offense you already run
  • Running the package from empty, one-back or two-back sets

Who it's for

High school offensive coordinators and quarterbacks coaches who see three-deep zone most Friday nights, and any spread coach who wants a compact list of Cover 3 answers.

About the coach

Rich Hargitt was the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Nation Ford High School in South Carolina. With this offense the school produced a 2,000 yard passer, earned their first statewide top ten ranking and won the first playoff game in school history.

The philosophy of attacking Cover 3 is explained with actual game film. Runtime: about 38 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Which Cover 3 concepts are installed?

Texas Tech four verticals, Florida flood, Clemson/Wisconsin deep cross, Wyoming curl/flat, Houston, Hawaii slant/flat, Ducks 2 quick screen, Ducks 2 Joker and the Texas Tech All Curl with the post, each shown against three-deep on film.

Will this work for my staff?

It was built and proven at the high school level with a simple read progression, four run plays and one protection, so a small staff can teach it. Hargitt also shows how to bolt the concepts onto an existing offense rather than switching systems.

How does buying and watching work?

It streams on demand. A one-time $19.95 charge adds the video to your AFM Videos account for unlimited viewing on phone, tablet or computer, and the 1-Year All Access membership at $99 covers it along with every other title.

How does it fit with the rest of the series?

It is the second of four. The others attack Cover 2, man coverage and goal line defenses, and all four share the same state-and-program naming system so the calls carry over.
