About this video

Rich Hargitt shows how the spread, no-huddle offense attacks Cover 2, using tempo to simplify what the defense can show and a menu of named route concepts to find open grass behind and between the two safeties. This is the first part of his four-part series on beating specific coverages, and it is built for a high school offense that wants a fast, simple passing game with a short run menu and one base protection.

What you'll learn

  • How a faster tempo creates simpler defensive looks and lets the offense control the pace of the game
  • How the spread, no-huddle finds weaknesses in the defense and gets receivers into open grass
  • Running at regular or fast tempo with simple read progressions
  • Why the offense works with limited running plays and a single base protection
  • Why Nation Ford names its attacking plays after states and programs, beginning with Texas Tech, their four verticals call
  • Cover 2 beaters: Alabama (three verticals), Wyoming Shake (peek routes), Kansas (shallow routes) and Kentucky (mesh routes)
  • Attacking two-deep with the bubble and swing pass
  • Running the package from empty, one-back or two-back sets
  • Adjusting routes by coverage, and how crossing and high-low combinations confuse a Cover 2 secondary

Who it's for

High school offensive coordinators and quarterbacks coaches running or installing a spread, no-huddle attack, plus any coach who needs a Cover 2 answer package that a young quarterback can handle.

About the coach

Rich Hargitt was the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Nation Ford High School in Fort Mill, South Carolina, where this system produced a quarterback who threw for nearly 2,000 yards and the first playoff win in school history.

The route concepts are explained with actual game film. Runtime: about 47 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What does this video teach me to do against Cover 2?

Coach Hargitt installs his Cover 2 answer package out of the spread, no-huddle: Texas Tech four verticals, Alabama three verticals, Wyoming Shake peek routes, Kansas shallow, Kentucky mesh, and the bubble and swing, all shown against two-deep on film.

Do I have to run the whole offense to use it?

Not necessarily. Hargitt built the package around limited run plays and one base protection, so a coach can lift the Cover 2 concepts into an existing spread or shotgun offense and keep his own naming system.
