About this video

Defensive line coach Tim Tobin opens his four-part series on defensive line play with advanced pass rush technique. The session is built around his SACKER acronym and the details that separate a rusher who gets close from one who finishes: stance, hand placement, reading the offensive lineman's feet and shoulders, and four base pass rush moves every defensive lineman should own.

What you'll learn

  • The SACKER acronym applied to the pass rush
  • Stance, alignment, hand placement and where your eyes belong before the snap
  • Reading the offensive lineman's feet and identifying his soft and hard shoulders
  • Evaluating whether the O-lineman's hands are low or high, and recognizing zone or man protection
  • Pass rush principles, starting with making your opponent commit first
  • How to find the weaknesses in the offensive line you are rushing against
  • Staying in the passing lanes, keeping outside leverage for containment, and the three-second rule for getting hands up
  • Tackling the quarterback high on the ball side
  • Stunts for passing situations and the four basic moves: rip, punch, bull rush and speed rush

Who it's for

Defensive line coaches and defensive coordinators in high school and college football. The technique is front-neutral, so it installs the same whether you line up in a 4-3, 4-2-5, 4-4, 3-4 stack or 3-3-5.

About the coach

Tim Tobin coached the defensive line at Kutztown University, where he also served as strength and conditioning coach, and has coached on staff at Tusculum College.

Frequently asked questions

What pass rush material is actually covered?

Coach Tobin teaches the SACKER framework, stance and alignment, reading the blocker's feet, hands and soft or hard shoulder, protection recognition, passing lane and containment rules, the three-second hands-up rule, pass rush stunts, and the rip, punch, bull rush and speed rush moves.

Does this only apply to a four-man front?

No. It is individual defensive line technique rather than a front-specific plan, so ends and tackles in a 4-3, 4-2-5 or 4-4 and the linemen in a 3-4 stack, 3-3-5 or 3-5-3 all rush with the same rules.

How does the streaming work?

Every AFM video is Buy Now, Watch Now. A single $19.95 purchase gives you the video in your account with unlimited replays on any device, and the 1-Year All Access membership ($99/year) streams this one plus the entire AFM Videos library.

What are the four base pass rush moves he installs?

The rip move, the punch move, the bull rush and the speed rush. Tobin ties each one to what the offensive lineman's hands and shoulders give you, so rushers learn to choose a move rather than guess at one.
