About this video

Once the up-tempo spread Wing-T is installed, the next question is how to point it at the defense in front of you. In Part IV of his series, Coach Lew Johnston lays out the game-plan side of the offense: forcing the defense to adjust to motion and shifts, finding where it is weak, and attacking across a broad front before it can get lined up. Ten guiding principles hold the whole thing together, including a communication system simple enough to call plays at speed.

What you'll learn

  • The objectives of the up-tempo, spread Wing-T offense
  • How to force the defense to adjust to you with heavy motion and shifting
  • Ten specific principles of the offense, including simple play-call communication
  • Starting the attack by testing the flank with the Jet Sweep from Wildcat and Tiger formations
  • How to diagnose where a defense is weak and attack it across a broad front
  • Using the Wildcat formation to stretch the defense vertically and horizontally
  • Mixing in the passing game to complement the run, and timing play-action for when it is least expected
  • Playing at a fast pace all game, then changing the pace to keep the defense off balance
  • How to save the unexpected call for the right moment

Frequently asked questions

What is this session about?

It is the attacking-defenses installment of the up-tempo spread Wing-T series: reading what a defense gives you, stressing it with motion, shifts and the Jet Sweep from Wildcat and Tiger, and using tempo changes and the unexpected call to stay ahead of it.

What level of football is this aimed at?

It is written from a high school head coach's chair and fits high school staffs best, though youth and small-college coaches running Wing-T or multiple-formation offenses will find the weak-point diagnosis and tempo rules just as usable.

How does the video get to me?

Buy it for $19.95 and it is yours to stream immediately from your AFM Videos account — desktop, tablet or phone, with unlimited views and no disc to wait for. The 1-Year All Access membership ($99/year) includes it along with everything else in the library.

Should I watch the earlier parts first?

This is the final part of Coach Johnston's installation series, which also covers the install, the running game and the passing game. It stands on its own as a game-planning session, but the earlier parts supply the plays this one tells you when to call.
