About this video

Delta State finished first in the country among Division II programs in pass efficiency defense, and head coach Ron Roberts shows how the coverages behind his 3-3-5 got it there. The session is about getting the most out of whatever you call - man or zone - by identifying the pass concept in front of you, knowing exactly where your own coverage is soft and disguising it well enough that the quarterback cannot tell. Coach Roberts' defense produced 20 interceptions and gave up 227 yards of total defense per game, second in the nation.

Frequently asked questions

Which coverages are taught?

Zone principles on the 3/2 structure, man principles on 1/0, and match-up coverage, along with identifying pass concepts, finding the holes in your own calls and disguising what you play.

Is it only useful to 3-3-5 teams?

The coverages are presented as the complement to Coach Roberts' 3-3-5 pressure, but the concept identification, weakness audit and disguise work belong in any defensive back room at the college or high school level.

Why bother learning your own coverage weaknesses?

Because offenses attack them. Coach Roberts teaches coaches to find the soft spot in every call first, then disguise the look so the quarterback cannot get there pre-snap.
